The growl notification would work for some things, but my specific want is to be able to quickly glance and see what the next few tracks are going to be. I don't want to have to blindly click next into an unknown track.

So, for me the dashboard widget is the way to go since it allows me to have the ability to view the playlist when I want to without having to be VNCed into the remote machine.

Have you considered using a growl notification instead of a website and a dashboard widget?

The problem with Spotify is that it doesn't have an AppleScript dictionary. That's not insurmountable though, since if you turn on Access for Assistive Devices in the
Universal Access
panel of
System Preferences
you can use AppleScript to control any application via its Menu Items.

Yep, I was thinking kitchen, bathroom, bedroom although you would need a device running Airfoil (win/mac/linux) It is a shame that there are no cheaper version of the airport express.

Would it be possible to control Spotify with a similar apple script?

That's a good point - I'd forgotten about the Remote App.

In my case using the app wouldn't help much, as it would involve me having to take my hands off the keyboard and pick up a phone instead, but it could prove useful when I'm in the kicthen cooking!

Awesome, this also means you can still use the Remote App on the iPhone.
